Kinect the Possibilities

In this time of complete digitalization, it can be assumed that there are many products on the market that will end up having multiple purposes and functions. The product that I find most promising is the Xbox Kinect. If you are not familiar with the Microsoft product, which has already sold over 10 million systems, it is a device that connects to the Xbox 360 and allows you to control the system using your hands and voice commands. If you want a much better explanation follow the link to find out more.

As a Kinect owner, I can certainly vouch for how fun it is to play, but the possibilities of this device reach much farther than gaming, all the way to the B2B marketing world.

What does the Kinect have to do with marketing or advertising? Here are some examples that quickly came to mind, so you can tell the possibilities are bound to grow.

  1. Video conferencing: The Kinect and its motion-sensing camera have the ability to do face recognition and can process voice commands, taking your conference call or presentation to the next level.

  2. Virtual tours: Imagine I’m at home thinking about the new Audi A3 and I want to see this beauty right now. With the Kinect, I now have the ability to take a custom virtual tour of the A3 right from the living room. Pick your options, exterior and interior colors and then using motion control open the door and move inside. Start the car, look under the hood, and open the sunroof! The possibilities are almost endless. A great B2B example would be a virtual demo of a new piece of machinery you are trying to get out to your distributor network.

  3. Virtual social media: Using your avatar, you could connect with others to start and join in social conversations that are relevant to your brand and industry. Using a potential virtual social media platform, you would have the ability to promote and grow a following that will impact your business.

  4. You’re in control: Navigate the web, TV, games, or movies with gestures and voice commands. How awesome would it be to not have 5 remotes to deal with? You come home and want to watch ESPN to see how the New York Jets are dominating the NFL yet again so you say “TV on”, then “Guide.” Then using your hand, you scroll the guide options down till you see ESPN, hover on it for a few seconds and you are ready to go. No need to pick up or put down whatever you had in your hand. A B2B example could be trade show engagement with your audience, letting them control how they navigate your booth.

So now that I shared a few ideas, I’m sure your head is spinning with possibilities. And for all I know, you’re the person with the next big idea. You can take most of the ideas out there and apply them to the B2B landscape to create engagement opportunities. I’m thinking this could be big and am looking forward to what we could be seeing in the future.

You're absolutely right about the possibilities, and I'm looking forward to see what third-party developers do with the technology. I read with interest about Johnny Chung Lee's appropriation of the Wii remote for a variety of innovative -- and low cost -- applications. Check them out here: http://johnnylee.net/projects/wii/
