Thinking, Art Directing, and Designing your B2B Website Differently

One of the things I truly love about what I do is that what I do is never the same. I like change, or maybe it is that I like the challenge that change brings. Not sure, but I’ve always been someone who pushes myself to do more—learn more. And digital provides a plethora of challenges. As an art director, I have to remember all my training—not forget it, and then put that all aside. If you can’t do this, you can’t keep up with all the changes in technology, and you will box yourself in, becoming stagnant.

Today users are visiting websites on different devices and browsers, you may need to think about planning your site completely differently depending on your goals—and that means art directing, and designing differently too. Responsive web design is a completely different way of thinking in order to anticipate and respond to the users’ needs. And from what I have done, it requires you to start from the ground up. In other words, start thinking and designing with the smallest size first—the phone, don't begin with the website.

It is amazing how much you need to think differently, and you shouldn’t do it alone. As I said in my last post, it is a team effort to come up with the big idea and a great solution. “Please kids, do not try this on your own.” You need to hear different viewpoints, and have others challenge you and your thinking. Because in the end, you will not only meet your clients established goals, you will connect with the audience and provide a positive user experience—all because you were able to think differently about how you work and how you think.

More and more people are using a mobile device to browse the web everyday. If your website isn't mobile friendly, that's a huge group of people that won't be able to view it, which means that you are missing out on lots of opportunities.
