Johnson Controls, Inc.: Building Efficiency

Challenge

Godfrey’s work for the Building Efficiency business of Johnson Controls, Inc., spans trade/technical publicity for the company’s commercial/industrial and light commercial/residential HVAC operating groups (the former York International Corp. business); consumer publicity for three brands of residential HVAC products; and national level trade and business media relations and publicity for corporate-level events and initiatives, e.g., the annual Energy Efficiency Forum in Washington, D.C. The Building Efficiency group provides effective and efficient solutions for operating buildings to increase energy efficiency and operational performance.

Solution

Our overall objective is raising awareness of the Johnson Controls brand (as the company is committed to safe, comfortable and sustainable environments), including awareness of Johnson Controls as the manufacturer of York, Coleman and Luxaire brand heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. Our “smart environments” messages are targeted variously to building owners, facility managers, energy/environmental managers, consulting-specifying engineers, process engineers, architects, general contractors, equipment distributors, installing/servicing contractors, home builders/remodelers and homeowners. This program is national in scope and is integrated with other Johnson Controls and sub-brand marketing communications programs (national trade and consumer advertising, regional co-marketing, Web and literature development and maintenance, trade show support, direct marketing, etc.). We are also agency members of the Johnson Controls Corporate Global PR Team, and participate in twice-monthly global conference calls designed to keep team members informed of important activities and provide a forum for ongoing coordination of programs and resources, worldwide.

Results

We have a 25-year track record of excellent trade PR results for the legacy York International business, and more recently, a 5-year track record of excellent consumer PR results for the residential HVAC business. Since December 2005 (when Johnson Controls acquired York), we have a strong record of bringing new ideas and improving PR results for the Building Efficiency business, based in Milwaukee, WI.
