Where is Your Audience? (Stacie Minnich)

Chances are your audience won’t be waiting patiently for you to return as the economy flips its frown upside-down. As marketers, we are challenged to reach our audiences where they want us to reach them, not where we think they’ll be. Listening and researching are imperative in order to offer a successful and relevant campaign.

Here are a few tips to consider:

Think like your audience. Could it be that they are no longer flipping page by page through your industry trade publications but rather reading an online version? Or do they prefer text updates on their iPhones or Blackberries in order to keep up with their transient lifestyles?

Don’t be afraid to try new outlets. Interactive media allows for your audience to ask questions and provide insight on your products or services. Think Twitter, Facebook or Blogs. Your audience interacts when they want to interact, not when you want them to…however with the power of analytics, you can start to see a trend of when this interaction is taking place.

Research. Who hasn’t Googled their own name? The same goes for your company. You might also be surprised what you find. It could offer insight on who is talking about your company, what they’re saying, and where they’re saying it.

Keep an eye on your competitors. It’s possible that your competitors have had to tighten the purse strings and advertising has taken a back seat. That opens a door for you to not only hit your audience, but theirs too.

Bottom line is with this ever-changing media landscape, it’s essential to keep your eyes and ears open to make sure you’re able to strike while the iron is hot.
